I am delighted to announce that Brian Pratt has accepted the position of Chief, University Planning, Design and Construction (UPDC) for the University, effective June 1, 2026.

The Chief, University Planning, Design & Construction will oversee the planning and capital program of the University’s portfolio of buildings and related facilities spanning academic, research, administrative, residential and commercial buildings on the three campuses.  Overseeing a talented team of project planners, managers, architects, and developers, the Chief, as the University Architect, will work to better position the portfolio to deliver the University’s expansive capital program on budget and schedule.  This will involve organizational changes to reflect the increased scope and scale of our tri-campus building projects.

Brian Pratt, AIA, DBIA, LEED AP is an Associate Vice Chancellor and the Campus Architect at the University of California, Irvine, and responsible for the design and construction of all major projects for the University. Brian oversees all aspects of projects from programming and procurement through construction and occupancy. He is responsible for all project types on campus, including research facilities, laboratories, athletic facilities, academic buildings, offices, food service, dormitories and student spaces. His current portfolio includes academic and ancillary (residential) building projects.

Most recently, Brian oversaw the delivery of the US’s first all-electric hospital, ambulatory care building of its size – a $1b healthcare project. Similarly, his team was responsible for delivering the new College of Health Sciences and Nursing Building, housing the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute flagship clinic, and the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health and Nursing. He currently leads a group of accomplished Project Managers, QA/QC Engineers, Contract Analysts, Inspectors and Finance/Budget Analysts. He is the Designated Campus Building Official, serving as the Agency having jurisdiction on campus projects.

Having served on the Board of Directors and as President of the American Institute of Architects, Orange County, he is a respected professional excelling in working on complex projects with multiple campus stakeholders. In private practice, clients included the City of Long Beach, the Department of Defense, the City of Ft. Bragg, the City of Desert Hot Springs, the Arizona Cardinals, University of Arkansas, Pomona College, UC San Diego, UC Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside.  Brian’s work is driven by meeting timelines and budget expectations.

Brian has been recognized with several awards and recognitions, and he has been invited to speak about his work to groups including the AIA, DBIA, SCUP, universities and colleges. Many of Brian’s projects have achieved various levels of LEED certification and have been used to establish guidelines for future projects for many clients.

Please join in my enthusiasm of welcoming Brian to the UofT.

Kind regards,

Scott Mabury, Vice-President, Operations & Real Estate Partnerships
